Artists finish new mural on Weston Off Licence, Hornsey

Tia McKoy and Tessie Orange-Turner, who recently graduated from The London School of Muralism, chose the wall of Weston Off Licence for their first project together.

Shopkeeper Halil Kurt gave them the go-ahead to transform the previously neglected side of the building.

In designing the mural, the artists consulted the Hornsey Historical Society for inspiration and spoke with long-time local residents.

The finished artwork pays tribute to Weston Park’s parade of shops, featuring items that represent the area’s history. These include a soap box honouring a launderette that has operated since the 1960s, a strawberry Cornetto in reference to Shaun of the Dead, which was filmed in the area, and a copy of The Evening News, which was once stocked at the opposite newsagents.

The mural also includes other items, each with its own story linked to the locality.

The artists expressed their satisfaction with the community’s positive response and their happiness at being able to add life and colour to a shop that has been a consistent part of their lives since childhood.
