In a recent interview, global sensation Billie Eilish answered a range of questions from fellow celebrities. Responding to Jane Fonda and Stella McCartney, Eilish discussed the privilege of being able to platform social causes she “truly cares about”, and urged other artists to do the same.
The 23-year-old singer has been a vocal advocate for veganism and environmental causes. Famously, she used her 2021 Met Gala appearance to force designer Oscar de La Renta to go fur-free. She was raised as a vegetarian alongside her brother and co-creator, Finneas. She turned to veganism only a few years ago and admitted in this interview that it was initially “mainly because I hated my body and I thought I would lose weight.”
However, Eilish revealed to British Vogue that she came to discover “the completely horrific and disturbing animal agriculture that we all just pretend is normal and OK”.
Despite her vocal online and on-stage commitment to social causes, she maintains that she doesn’t intend to force her fans to change: “I’ll never shove it in anyone’s face. Everyone’s allowed to do and eat whatever they want.”
Nonetheless, Eilish recognised that artists are in a unique, privileged position to enable discussion. “There are so many ways artists can use their platforms in a non-preachy, self-serving way,” Eilish stated.
Eilish maintains that art should be used as a form of activism, adding, “I really do try to use mine as much as possible, because what’s the point otherwise, you know?”
Last year, Eilish, who recently made a guest appearance during Charli XCX’s Coachella set, released her new album, Hit Me Hard and Soft. She was nominated for seven Grammys but took home no prizes from the 2025 awards ceremony. Eilish is set to tour the UK in July, including a six-night residency at the O2 Arena in London.
