From Thin Lizzy to Fontaines DC: the artists behind music’s iconic logos


Lauren Murphy talks to Jim Fitzpatrick and Ash Willerton, the designers behind the legendary artwork of two of Ireland’s greatest exports

If you found yourself stargazing in Cardiff, Manchester or London in recent weeks, you may have spotted something unusual. An imminent invasion of aliens who were fans of a certain Britpop band? No – just a clever marketing tactic as an impressive drone display mapped out Oasis’ instantly recognisable logo ahead of their gigs in each city. Dubliners will undoubtedly be treated to the same spectacle later this month.

The Oasis logo, the work of Mancunian graphic designer Brian Cannon, was designed in the 1990s, becoming one of the most distinguishable band logos of all time, joining the pantheon of greats including the Beatles, ABBA, the Rolling Stones, Nirvana and Thin Lizzy.
