Over 200 artists, 106 media workers killed in Ukraine since start of full-scale war

Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, 207 Ukrainian artists and 106 Ukrainian and foreign media professionals have been killed in Ukraine.

That is according to the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine, Ukrinform reports.

“These figures are not only about the scale of the loss, but they also serve as a reminder of the tragic pages of our history. Just as in the 1920s and early 1930s, the Stalinist regime destroyed a generation of Ukrainian artists, today Russia is deliberately targeting and destroying Ukraine’s cultural elite,” the ministry said.

It compared today’s losses to the “Executed Renaissance” — a generation of Ukrainian literary and artistic figures who gave the world masterpieces of literature, painting, music, and theater before being wiped out by Soviet repression.

“These artists were the pride of our nation. Today, we are once again losing not only talented Ukrainians but also a part of our soul. Each of our artists was a unique individual who enriched Ukrainian culture,” the statement said.

Journalists working in Ukraine today continue to produce crucial news stories, investigations, and frontline reports in extremely dangerous conditions.

“They document the war to provide Ukraine and the world with truthful information about what is happening,” the ministry said, adding that media professionals work around the clock to gather indisputable evidence of Russian war crimes and to highlight the strength, courage, and heroism of Ukrainian defenders.

The ministry condemned Russia’s systematic crimes against journalists and media outlets, saying they pose a grave threat to freedom of speech, information security, and democratic values and human rights. The ministry also called for the memory of the fallen to be preserved.

Lists of deceased artists, cultural workers, and media professionals are available on the ministry’s official website.
