Birmingham will be hosting its very first African Heritage Arts Day on Saturday 28th October 2006.
The free event will be celebrating and showcasing the cultural vibrancy and diversity of Birmingham’s African communities through music, arts, games, culture, film and food.
Crowds will be treated to singers such as Francis Mbella, Basil Gabbidon and Yaz Alexander; African drumming; dance from local dancers such as Sandra Golding and special guest dancer from the African Hebrew Israelites Community in Jerusalem – Kananel Ben Israel.

There will be entertainment from midday until 8.30pm across three stages in Victoria Square in Birmingham city centre. Here’s the line-up:

13:00 Drum Call – Adanta Group
13:10 Welcome! Dr. Mashuq Ally Head of Equality and Diversity
13:15 Africa live! DJ Jiovany ‘Dancing in the Street’
13:50 Karaoke, Cross Road Collision
14:00 Helele band. The music of the Helele band will bring messages of peace, non-violence and anti-racism. Stories of migration and asylum.
15:00 Adanta Dance – Adanta Dance Group will perform traditional African dances such as the Atilogu dance,
the Zulu Warrior dance, Nkwa Umu Agbogho (the Maiden dance), the Soukus (Zaire dance), etc
15:30 Yaz Alexander – Reggae Princess
16:00 Monikim Group – The Monikim dance is in a sense, a tribute and celebration of gratitude by the Ejagham people to their Abasi Isong (earth goddess).
16:30 Coco Mbassi ‘Spirit Speaks’ Gospel, Soul, Classical and Jazz
