Brixton Village will be celebrating Black History Month with a free art installation exploring African history, heritage and spirituality.
Named Dan Oracle, this immersive art installation curated by Afro-Brazilian artist and Brixton resident, Ana Beatriz Almeida, promises to “transform Brixton Village’s vibrant Market Row into a site of ritual and reflection.”
The organisers told Brixton Buzz more about the artwork:
Set against the background of Brixton Village’s rich heritage, Dan Oracle will take its audience on a journey of self-discovery through the artistic reconnection of indigenous African knowledge, fragmented by displacement and the slave trade.
Inspired by her initiation into Vodoun, Ana’s installation reimagines the city of London as a tarot deck, inviting audiences to engage with their own spirituality.
Dan Oracle will open at Market Row, Brixton Village from Monday 13th October until Friday 31st October, and will also include two unique installations expertly curated by Ana:
TRIBE:
Nigeria-based duo, TRIBE is a Black, trans-led performance duo blending vocals, movement, and live improvisation to create raw, genre-defiant soundscapes. TRIBE’s installation will explore grieving and transformation through indigenous knowledge
Angie Aniwura:
Canadian-born Nigerian artist Angie Aniwura’s installation is heavily influenced by the indigenous traditions of the Yorubas and her Ifá initiation journey (the spiritual process where one’s life’s purpose, destiny and inherent spiritual wisdom are revealed)
A bespoke soundscape curated by Brixton Village’s very own Haus, a Black-owned community-driven vinyl store, will further immerse Dan Oracle’s audience as it sails back and forth between African Indigenous philosophies and the history between West Africa and Brazil.
Brixton Village’s General Manager, Diana Nabagereka, commented:
“What a moment to be welcoming Dan Oracle to the market, as part of the wider Frieze landscape.
Brixton Village remains a hub of cultural exchange and creative energy, so hosting Dan Oracle feels like a natural continuation of that legacy.
We believe this installation is an extraordinary opportunity for the South London community and visitors to engage with powerful global narratives of the Latin African diaspora through contemporary art.”
