NICK MERRIMAN has stepped down as chief executive of English Heritage after 18 months in the role.
Since joining English Heritage in January 2024, Merriman has overseen a significant restructuring of the charity, resulting in a 7% reduction in its workforce and a decrease in opening hours at 40 of its 400 sites.
Before joining English Heritage, Merriman spent five years as chief executive and director of content at Horniman Museum and Gardens.
In a statement to staff, English Heritage said Merriman had stepped down with immediate effect for personal reasons relating to family health, and that GEOFF PARKIN will serve as an interim chief executive.
Chair of the trustees, GERARD LEMOS, said Parkin has worked with English Heritage on a pro bono basis over the last year “to craft a new commercial strategy, alongside acting as non-executive chair of two private equity backed travel businesses”.
Lemos said the board wished to “thank Nick for everything he has done”.
“Nick has led English Heritage through a challenging time, during which he has overseen a major change programme aimed at delivering financial sustainability,” he added.
