Festival in Iowa City celebrates African heritage with music, food, and art

The inaugural African Festival of Arts and Culture will take place in Iowa City on Saturday, Sept. 28, from noon to 9 p.m. at the Pedestrian Mall.

Sunday Goshit, co-chair of the festival’s planning committee, joined Iowa’s News Now morning show to preview the free event, which will showcase the vibrant cultural heritage of African communities in Iowa through music, dance, food, and art. Organized by local African groups and organizations, the festival aims to celebrate diversity and unity.

Goshit highlighted performances, a parade of nations fashion show, and vendors offering African clothing, art, and food.

With more than 30,000 African-born immigrants living in Iowa, the festival is the first of its kind in Iowa City and the state, aiming to bridge cultures and provide an educational experience for all attendees.
