International award for interior design of Jersey Heritage gallery space

AN exhibition celebrating some of our Jersey’s most significant historical moments has won an international award for the interior design of its gallery space.

‘La Tèrr’rie d’Jèrri – d’s histouaithes dé not’ Île’, which translates to ‘Being Jersey – stories of our Island’, won a Gold Award in the Better Future London Design Awards 2025.

The exhibition opened to the public last September at the Jersey Museum, Art Gallery and Victorian House.

It was commissioned by Jersey Heritage working with exhibition design specialists Nissen Richards Studio.

The Better Future London Design Awards recognise extraordinary design across a range of categories.

The interior design award that ‘La Tèrr’rie d’Jèrri’ won is open to all international projects, and celebrates innovation and creative building interiors.

Consideration is given to space creation, furnishings, aesthetic presentation and functionality, traffic flow, building services, lighting, fixtures, flooring, colours, and finishes.

Jersey Heritage’s director of curation and experience Louise Downie said: “The wonderful feedback about ‘La Tèrr’rie d’Jèrri’ that we have received from visitors to Jersey Museum since the new exhibition opened has already been reward for the months of hard work that went into revamping the gallery space to give it a fresh look and feel, and to researching and creating the exciting new displays.

“The Gold Award from the London Design Awards is the icing on the cake and is richly deserved by everyone involved in the project.

“Our thanks go to all those who helped us to create this new exhibition that celebrates our special Island, especially Nissen Richards Studio, who led the exhibition’s design that is now receiving international recognition.”

Nissen Richards Studio director Pippa Nissen added: “This was such an enjoyable project for everyone in our studio.

“We were very inspired in our designs by the Island’s natural beauty, archaeology and fascinating history.

“Working with the passionate and informed Jersey Heritage team made the design evolutions a real joy.

“We couldn’t be more pleased with this notable award win for such a deserving project.”

The ‘La Tèrr’rie d’Jèrri’ exhibition, which is on the first floor of Jersey Museum, explores how living in Jersey has affected the lives of just a few of the millions of people who have been part of its history.

The displays range from prehistoric mammoth skulls and dwarf red deer bones to gold torques, royal charters, items from the Battle of Jersey and Occupation years, and times when Jersey attracted artists, honeymooners and holidaymakers.

As well as key collection pieces on display, the exhibition includes a specially commissioned soundscape, two bespoke art installations, and audio-visual content that helps to share some of Jersey’s stories.

‘La Tèrr’rie d’Jèrri’ is open daily at Jersey Museum. Entry to the exhibition is free.
