ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Memorial Art Gallery celebrated Native American heritage on Saturday with the Haudenosaunee Heritage Celebration Day.
Guests enjoyed free museum admission, traditional dances, storytelling, and cultural displays.
Richard Hamell, a wampum bearer with Friends of Ganondagan, emphasized the importance of these events for the community.
“I think it’s a being aware of where you are and heritage of the land being Haudenosaunee, one of the Six Nations,” said Hamell. “And the children have done several school programs where the schools themselves in fourth grades designed their own Wampum built with the different images representing what their feelings are for their territory that they are occupying.”
The event also featured presentations by three different clans.
