Powys arts centre reopens following manager’s departure

Ashleigh Davies is the new part-time manager of the Llanwrtyd and District Heritage and Arts Centre, after Lynne Brookes stepped down in February, having completed eight years in the role.

Following a break over the winter months, the arts centre reopened on Thursday, April 2. It will be open weekly from Thursday to Sunday (including bank holidays) between 10am and 4pm.

In a post celebrating Lynne on its Facebook page, in February, the centre said: “As we start the new year it is with sadness that the heritage centre will say goodbye to its manager of eight years, Lynne Brookes, who is moving out of the area to be closer to her family – especially her children and grandchildren – in England.

“With a broad-ranging career that ranged from business management to marketing and PR, events organisation and even working as a professional singer and ballroom dancing teacher, Lynne has been instrumental in the development of the heritage centre.

“Particular achievements have been the gallery and the many performance events that we have hosted.

“As the trustees wish Lynne the very best for the future, we are also extremely pleased to be welcoming her successor, Ashleigh Davies, as the new part-time manager of the heritage centre.”

Llanwrtyd and District Heritage and Arts Centre exists to record and promote the history, culture and heritage of the town and this area of Mid Wales.

It is housed in a sensitively renovated congregational chapel near the town centre.

When the doors of the chapel closed to worshippers in 2009 a group of volunteers began a campaign to save it and developed the idea of creating an arts and heritage centre. After many years of fundraising and hard work it opened its doors again to visitors in 2016.

The centre continues to be run by volunteers, with entry free and accessible to all.

It is also home to an art gallery, runs events and hosts the History Resource Group which continues to record images and memories for future generations of visitors and residents.
