Natural Art

Natural art | The Argus

It is a lovely, under-rated area of downland. In the past few years, because of careful management and the efforts of the Friends of Sheepcote Valley, I have taken pleasure in seeing the variety of wild flowers increase – a true example of bio-diversity.

I am a nature-lover and environmentalist but I cannot see the problem with having a giant chalk bird carved into the hillside. It will not permanently scar the hillside. If it is decided later it is not wanted, simply letting nature take its course will ensure it is soon obliterated.

When I saw the notices in the park inviting local volunteers to help in its creation, I was pleased and excited, and have watched the marking-out process with interest.

Same Sky and Friends Of Sheepcote Valley are responsible organisations who work hard to enhance and improve our city and its environs. They should be allowed to continue with their planned chalk carving.

Traveller tale

The article regarding new-age travellers and the problems surrounding them (The Argus, August 22), raises many questions.

The notion this city should create a second official site for travellers would certainly exacerbate the problem. The actions of Brighton and Hove City Council over the past decade has sent a message this city is welcoming to them.

The first permanent site was very quickly filled and a second would quickly reach capacity. When this happens, new travellers arrive to fill the vacated sites which were illegally occupied.

To advocate that neighbouring towns do more to accommodate these people is irresponsible. All that would happen would be that the authorities involved would experience the same problems.

As a local and national taxpayer, I personally resent the fact that people who wish to create an alternative lifestyle and pay little if any tax should be allowed to use local facilities.

Our elected representatives have a duty to meet this challenge and respect the wishes of the people who elect them.
