Rare paintings of royal figures set to go under the hammer next month

Rare paintings of royal figures are set to go under the hammer at a Dorset auction.

Two early 17th-century portraits of King James I and King James VI are set to go under the hammer at Charterhouse’s upcoming auction in Sherborne, with each piece estimated to fetch between £2,000 and £4,000.

The portraits, believed to have been painted posthumously, once hung at Edington House, a Grade II* listed estate near Bridgwater in Somerset.

They have since remained with descendants just a short distance from their original location.

Richard Bromell of Charterhouse said: “Whilst I am certain they were a good likeness to their majesties, I am not sure members of the Royal Family would be too impressed with being painted in a similar way today.”

While the exact reason for the portraits’ creation remains unknown, it is believed they may have been intended for the original owners to show their allegiance and support for Scotland at a time of political strife.

Mr Bromell and the Charterhouse team, based at The Long Street Salerooms in Sherborne, continue to welcome entries for the upcoming auction, which will include pictures, books, and items related to country pursuits.

Valuations can be arranged by contacting the auction house on 01935 812277 or by emailing rb@charterhouse-auction.com.

The auction will take place on Wednesday, April 1.
