Darwen Heritage Centre gains official museum accreditation

The accreditation follows three years of work by the Centre’s trustees, who have developed and implemented policies and procedures that meet nationally agreed standards.

The recognition confirms that the museum is sustainable, trusted and focused, giving confidence to the public as well as funding and governing bodies.

Located in the heart of the town, Darwen Heritage Centre opened 10 years ago and operates as a registered charity.

It is run entirely by volunteers, including 12 trustees who oversee the day-to-day management of the centre.

Funding comes from donations and room hire, which support both the building and the care of its collection.

The centre showcases Darwen’s rich history through a range of permanent and changing displays.

It also provides exhibition space for local artists and photographers, with exhibitions changing throughout the year and often linking to national events.

A spokesperson for the centre said: “We are grateful for the many artefacts that have been generously donated or loaned to the Centre by the people of Darwen.”

There are three large exhibition spaces featuring items ranging from co-op tokens to paintings by wallpaper artists, alongside an extensive photographic archive.

Knowledgeable volunteers are on hand to help visitors, including those researching family history.

Darwen Heritage Centre also offers rooms for hire, which are regularly used by local groups.

Volunteers additionally support local schools by delivering activities and presentations that link to the national curriculum.

The centre is open on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10am to 3pm. Entry is free, although donations are welcome.

Anyone interested in volunteering is encouraged to get in touch with the centre directly.
