NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – It’s Hispanic Heritage month and the City of North Charleston held it’s second annual celebration on Friday. Not only celebrating the music, dancing and vibrant art, but honoring and celebrating the hispanic culture here in the lowcountry.
North Charleston resident and Ofrenda artist of the event, Stephania FRX, explained the diversity is the spice of life.
The Hispanic Heritage Celebration in North Charleston’s Park Circle, celebrated the vibrant art, music, dancing, and food that define Hispanic culture. Local and head of Latino Marketing at George Sink, Fernando Soto, explained that Latino Heritage month is all about celebrating their culture, and being proud of Latinadad.
“I think more importantly, for Latinos in the South, this is a time to celebrate and show the greater community,” said Soto.
The City of North Charleston’s Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration is in it’s second year. It’s not only a celebration, but an opportunity for learning.
For people who have been thinking of wanting to try salsa dancing, this is an opportunity to come out, learn, and try it, explained FRX. “ You get to learn, experience, and enjoy perhaps something that you didn’t have an opportunity to do.”
While the event celebrates diversity, it’s also a chance to share common interests and traditions. Being able to share the heritage and culture with everyone, explained FRX. “Getting to hang out by the Ofrenda last year was an amazing opportunity to connect and listen to the community while sharing stories about the people and pets they love”.
All while bringing together North Charleston’s Growing Hispanic Community. Soto explained when he moved to the Lowcountry over 20 years, there was very little of that. Being able to see multiple events happening throughout the month all over the lowcountry fills him with pride.
“It fills me with pride and joy because it shows our community is here to stay and people are celebrating it,” said Soto.
The opportunity to celebrate the present, look towards the future, and honor the past. It should be a moment to take pride and ownership, as this is home, explained Soto.
“We also haven’t forgotten about our roots and where we come from. And teaching the younger generations about our traditions,” said Soto.
The Hispanic Heritage Month goes on until October 15th, with many events like this happening in the Lowcountry over the next few weeks.
