My Heritage art show in Aldergrove opens for submissions

The Langley Arts Council is once again hosting the My Heritage exhibition.

This spring, artists are invited to bring their personal stories and cultural reflections to the main hall gallery at the Aldergrove Kinsmen Community Centre.

“Providing artists with the opportunity to tell their story,” is what makes My Heritage distinct. said arts council executive director Claire Sarfeld.

Submission deadline for artists is Thursday, Feb. 5.

There is no application fee and no requirement to be a Langley Arts Council member.

People of all ages can submit original 2D or 3D work that explores their heritage. The submissions process is detailed online at langleyarts.ca/submit/heritage, where people can also fill out an application form.

This year’s show will run from March 5 to April 27, with an opening reception scheduled for March 7.

Selected artwork will be displayed in person at the community centre and online.

All artworks must be available for purchase.

Now in its fourth year, the exhibition continues to grow in audience and participation.

Sarfeld said her favourite part is not only the artwork, but the words that accompany the pieces.

“The write-ups alongside are always very touching, and bring another layer of meaning to the exhibition. Personally, it’s my favourite part of the exhibition,” said Sarfeld.

Those written reflections often share where artists grew up, family histories, or experiences they continue to reflect on.

Last year’s exhibition featured 23 artists and filled the gallery space.

The public reception drew artists and community members to talk with one another, and Sarfeld said it was received “wonderfully” by Aldergrove.
