One of Cezanne’s most famous series of paintings is ‘The Card Players’ and it shows a quiet, but rather intense play of cards by the working class. It has many different versions, some with two men, others with more, and each of them show the men dressed in formal attire, hats on head and pipes in mouth, and engrossed in their game with an almost sculptural stillness.
In this painting, two men sit across each other on a table, cards in their hand, and a bottle on the table. On their face is a calm, composed expression, almost as if playing cards is a part of their day.
