Black Box Chinese Opera Festival: A New Take on Heritage Art


The annual Chinese Opera Festival presents five productions adapted for the modern stage, including two acclaimed Kunqu operas and three award-winning Cantonese operas. 

Description

This year’s Black Box Chinese Opera Festival features five original productions devised and adapted for the modern stage to offer new perspectives on the heritage art form. 

The programme includes three award-winning Cantonese opera productions from the Xiqu Centre: Farewell My Concubine (New Adaptation), Wenguang Explores the Valley and The Imperial Decree. Two acclaimed Kunqu operas, Qingshan Embrace Me and The Burning Painting will also be featured

All productions showcase bold experimentation and a contemporary sensibility through a range of regional genres and styles. Performances will be in Cantonese or regional languages with Chinese and English subtitles.
