“Tony Fowler – A Retrospective Exhibition”
This varied exhibition is comprised of the paintings and illustrations produced by Tony Fowler over several years.
The Fowler family moved to St Annes when Tony was fourteen. His inspirational teacher at that time was Phyllis Hibbert. She was a brilliant watercolour artist who encouraged Tony to follow an art career.
At Blackpool School of Art, over a period of four years, Tony studied a whole range of art techniques and genres, eventually specialising in painting and lithography. Having completed the National Diploma in Design (NDD) Course, the default progression was to gain an art teacher’s degree in Liverpool. Over that period his teachers included Gerald Rose, the award winning illustrator, and the photographer Norman Butler. Inevitably illustration and photography became passions for the developing artist.
A career in education included the post of Head of the Art Department in Bidford-on-Avon High School, St Bede’s Lytham, St Joseph’s College/ St Mary’s Blackpool and Highfield.
As well as teaching it was important that his talent should be utilised by producing freelance work. Over the years he produced a wide range of commissions; old master copies, murals, package illustration, scene painting, portraiture and cartoons.
Retiring from teaching in 2014, he decided to concentrate on easel painting.
Tony’s children, like their father they have always enjoyed the arts. Unlike their father they have worked consistently as professional designers after leaving art school. He is justifiably proud of their achievements in the art milieu. Tony hopes that visitors will enjoy his work, which amply displays that his training, tradition and affection is firmly placed in this community.
