Norton Museum hosts free community event for Hispanic Heritage Month

The Norton Museum of Art on Saturday, Oct. 4 hosted Nuestra Cultura Community Day, a free event for people to help celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

The day included bands playing traditional music from Guatemala, Mexico and Cuba as well as lessons on how to play dominoes through the Puerto Rican Cultural Society of Palm Beach County.

There was an opportunity to learn about Hispanic artists at the Norton, such as Nora Maite Nieves, Teresita Fernandez, Francisco de Goya and Jose Clemente Orozco, and performances by a group celebrating the richness of Hispanic and Latin dance. There was also a dance class to learn the basics of bachata, merengue and salsa.

Activities for children included decorating plaster skulls, inspired by Day of the Dead traditions of Mexico and other Latin American countries, a paper huipil collage class, inspired by traditional blouses of Mexico and Central America, and a stickless, pull-string pinata party.

People snacked from the empanadas and Mexican street corn bar.
