Artist Nikki Main has won this year’s Waterhouse Natural Art History Prize.
She graduated from her fine art degree at the Australian National University in Canberra last year and now receives $50,000 for a hand-blown glass creation called Flood Stones.
Ms Main says she found inspiration for the winning piece while living on her property on the Murrumbidgee River, outside Canberra.
“We rely on water so my work really focuses on the rhythms of dry periods and flood times,” she said.
The South Australian Museum started Australia’s richest natural history art prize in 2002.
The artist plans to use the money to set up an art studio in Canberra.
