This past Earth Day, Australian photographer and conservationist Jon McCormack invited the world to look more closely at the planet we inhabit. On April 22, 2026, McCormack launched his debut monograph, Patterns: Art of the Natural World (Damiani), a meditation on the hidden geometries that define Earth’s most breathtaking landscapes and ecosystems — from the volcanic coasts of Iceland and the wilds of Kenya to the icy fjords of Antarctica and the rainforests of British Columbia. All proceeds from the book benefit Vital Impacts, the women-led nonprofit founded by National Geographic photographer Ami Vitale.
Coinciding with the book’s release, Photoville and the South Street Seaport Museum open “Elements of Wonder: When Nature Becomes Art,” a free outdoor exhibition on Water Street in Manhattan running through June 14, 2026. Drawn from a decade-long environmental photography project spanning five continents, the work moves between the microscopic and the aerial — mineral formations, river deltas, migration trails, and coral structures — revealing the quiet, recurring architecture that connects all living systems. No registration is required.
McCormack, who leads camera software engineering for iPhone at Apple, has spent decades collaborating with conservation organizations, Indigenous communities, and field researchers. Essays in the monograph are contributed by Wade Davis, David George Haskell, Sylvia Earle, and Daniel Katz.
