A pair of portraits depicting classical female saints went under the hammer at Fonsie Mealy’s Chatsworth Fine Art sale (29 April to 1 May).

The paintings were consigned by the Ponsonbys of Ballynatray, Co. Waterford (est. €300 to €400). Following a bidding war, involving eight telephone bidders, they sold for €73,000.

“It was a battle royale to the very end,” says George Fonsie Mealy, auctioneer. The paintings have been purchased by an Italian buyer on behalf of a private collector who will doubtless embark upon a long journey of research.

“Speculation suggests they may possibly be early works by Simon Vouet, executed during his time in Rome around 1620,” says Arabella Bishop, independent art advisor and former senior director of Sotheby’s.

“Prospective buyers were effectively taking a calculated gamble on the attribution. Only time will tell!”
