Pints and paintings: Popular Limerick pub devotes space to works of art

THE CORNER of a Limerick city centre pub has in part turned into a gallery, with local artists showcasing  their work.

Space on the walls of The Glen Tavern in Lower Glentworth Street has been given over to several paintings, sculptures and other pieces of art, as part of the initiative.

It’s named Seomra Comhra, or Conversation Room, and is a collaboration between artists Carl Doran and Sean Healy of Fun Limerick Productions.

They were approached by Cathal Callanan of the Glen Tavern to identify artists to put their creations on display.

“The whole idea is to have an informal art gallery within a public house. A number of artists we know have had work which suited.

“We have replaced what had been on the walls – old prints – and installed art pieces which create conversation,” Carl explained.

The initiative began last month, with a three-week display by Wickham Street artist Tim O’Neil.

Painter Melanie O’Rourke has her work on show until Friday, May 29. Then Dan Scully will erect some of his best photographs until Thursday, June 18.

There’s hopes The Glen Tavern will once again turn into a gallery later in the year.

Carl says it helps artists, due to the lack of gallery space available in the city.

“It’s about breaking down barriers,” he added.
