Difference between raw and art silk
When you’re shopping for a special occasion, like a wedding saree or an outfit for a big occasion, everything starts to look the same after a point. Especially if you are hunting for something in silk, you would have probably heard terms like “raw silk” and “art silk” thrown around, and unless you’re a textile pro, it’s easy to get confused.
Raw silk is basically a less polished version of traditional silk. It comes from real silkworms but doesn’t go through as much processing. Due to this nature raw silk feels a bit coarse to the touch and has a more earthy, matte look. On the other hand, Art silk is exactly as its name suggests. It’s made using synthetic fibers like rayon or polyester. While it looks eerily similar to real silk -shiny, smooth, and glamorous – once you touch it or wear it, the difference becomes more obvious.

Look closely
Raw silk is natural, which gives it an uneven shine. Considering its a manmade property, art silk will usually appear uniformly glossy.
The Touch Test
If you love fabrics that feel rich and organic, raw silk will totally win your heart. It feels a little grainy which is extremely noticeable to touch. However, art silk looks glossier and feels extremely smooth and slick to the touch.
The airflow test
Raw silk is usually natural and breathable. Art silk, on the other hand is not as breathable and can feel warm or sticky on the body due to its artificial fabric.
Price check
Raw silk is extremely valuable, and yes it can cost a pretty penny. It also comes with an authenticity mark that proves its value. Meanwhile, Art silk is glossier, sleeker and budget friendly. It usually does not burn a hole in your wallet.
